These opposing signs are one of the better matches between those you wouldn't expect to get along.  All signs tend to slip into the one opposite when cornered, stressed or overwhelmed, so there is a certain fundamental understanding of the other.  It's familiar ground, so to speak, even if you don't stay there all the time.  They're both Cardinal Signs, but not as likely to clash as many others since it's expressed in slightly different ways.  Both are definitely self-motivated, but Cancers usually express this more in a personal relationship manner while Cappy is just plain ambitious and trying to climb that mountain of social recognition and status.  So if the Cancer is the hub of their social and family life and keeps all that organized and running smoothly, Cappy will be the last one to complain.

The Water-Earth elemental configuration is a good one.  Of course too much of one or the other isn't so great, but that is true with any combination.  Generally, water softens the earth and is essential for growth.  Likewise, water is most useful when it's contained, somewhat like the dam concept.  Earth signs in general, Capricorn in particular, is often accused of being emotionally cold.  This is not true.  Goats simply don't display their emotions for others to see.  But they're there and they appreciate it when someone acknowledges this fact without getting all sloppy on them.  Cancer expresses affection in such a warm, matter-of-fact manner that Cappy soaks it up like a spring rain.  Other people might be afraid to give a Goat a big hug, but the Crab doesn't even think about it, which works our very well for them both.  I remember having a Crab employee one time and giving him a pretty nice raise for work well done.  He got all weepy in appreciation and gave me this big hug that just about blew me away.  We remained friends, long after both of us had moved on to other jobs.  This person was not a wimp in any sense of the word.  In my opinion he was man enough to not be afraid to show affection and emotion.

Both signs are very family oriented.  Cancers, who are ruled by the Moon, have a great affinity, appreciation and even reverence for motherhood.  Cappy, ruled by Saturn, planet of responsibility, is interconnected to their family like rebar reinforced concrete.  These similar values make the priorities list short and simple, with the possible exception of Cappy's career, but that is of course motivated by the desire to take care of one's family in the best possible manner.  Generally this will be a good solid match, but of course can be messed up by afflicted Moons or Ascendants.
