Full Moon

This month's Full Moon on 12 January is in Cancer and sports a somewhat ominous looking Cardinal Grand Cross, meaning every planet involved, including the Sun and Moon, is in a Cardinal Sign. Cardinal Signs include Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. When the Sun enters, or ingresses, one of these signs it announces a new season and thus a cosmic event such as one of the solstices or equinoxes. Cardinal signs have a propensity for taking action and initiating new situations. Thus, this is not a passive configuration but one which requires or will precipitate action. Ignoring it will not make it go away.

The lunation, which comprises the Sun in Capricorn and the Moon in Capricorn's polar sign, Cancer, hooks up with the Uranus-Jupiter opposition with the Sun slightly downstream from Pluto. Thus the Lord of the Underworld's somewhat dark but potentially transformational energy reinforces that bothersome T-square. For nearly as long as that T-square has been in effect, Saturn has been forming a pattern known as a Triangle of Potential with the opposition linking Jupiter and Uranus. While those two are in a potentially difficult aspect that calls for balance, perhaps between expanding a relationship or other interest versus more personal freedom, Saturn forms a soft aspect with each, i.e. a trine to Uranus and sextile to Jupiter. This puts him in a favorable position to mitigate the opposition. Saturn relates to structure, discipline, responsibility, wisdom and even karma, so the key to dealing with this conflict is implementing Saturn's energy.

The Moon forms an aspect pattern I refer to as a Course Adjustment Loop, a.k.a. learning triangle, with Uranus and Saturn, which points the way toward some restructuring of a few things, including your attitude. This aspect pattern typically indicates hitting a dead-end that necessitates a change of course, after which things proceed more smoothly. Of you've been ignoring Saturn, then you're likely to have some other sort of wake-up call. In other words, this lunation will thus bring about a few events that could open things up in a new direction, perhaps by hitting you upside the head with something if you haven't been paying attention. Without taking advantage of what's out there, you're likely to remain stuck between a rock and a hard place. Taking action on learning from the past by resolving old issues can be helpful as well. The good news is that a Full Moon often indicates an ending, culmination, or shift to a new phase, so it's time to git 'r' dun now that Mercury has stationed direct (see below).

Venus, Neptune and Mars are all in Pisces, making it the most highly populated sign for much of January. Venus is exalted, Neptune in dignity, so their energies are strong. This can bring new insights, inspiration, compassion, forgiveness, and genuine caring, any of which can facilitate that attitude adjustment, if you let it. Mars will provide the motivation to act upon it. Remember that forgiving someone is for your good, not theirs. It doesn't mean you agree, condone or tolerate despicable behavior, it simply means you let it go. It's been said we should forgive everyone, but that doesn't mean we should sleep with a rattlesnake. Thus, reconciliation isn't necessarily the goal. It can be, but only if appropriate. A New Year often provides some motivation for change via resolutions to do something differently. This suggests letting go of the past, in one form or another, at least if you want the change to be permanent. Remember, if you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep on getting what you've always got. If you aren't happy with the status quo, then change of some description is called for.

New Moon

The New Moon is on 27 January in Aquarius. This type of lunation usually brings something new and I'm happy to report that, by this time, that annoying T-square is mostly gone; the square between Jupiter and Pluto is now out of orb, or range of influence. Thus, if you've taken care of business with the Full Moon, then clearer sailing could lie ahead. A change of direction in a relationship is possible, but this might require overcoming some expectations with regard to responsibilities. Some restructuring is required, which may not be easy. Sometimes restructuring is done brick by brick and other times in a cold-turkey blast. The latter is favored in this lunation and actually has been for the duration of the Triangle of Potential described above; in other words, sudden change as opposed to the step-by-step variety. Balance will still need to be achieved under the new paradigm, but this should be achievable if a new foundation is in place with boundaries set with reasonable and agreed upon expectations. Remember these are likely to relate to the house identified above.

This provides a great follow-up energy to the Full Moon, which encouraged an environment pointing toward positive change. Say good riddance to something (or someone) that has been holding you back, and then move forward on a new path.

OTHER COSMIC EVENTS

This month is rather quiet with the only retrograde-related event when Mercury stations direct on January 8 at 28:51 Sagittarius. That T-square is still in force at this time, but dissipates later in the month as noted above. If Mercury RX has related to getting rid of something or getting past some powerful obstacles or persistent boundaries, then this station may mark the time to start preparing to move forward. There's a yod in this chart, a.k.a. "finger of god," which often indicates something of a fated nature could come to pass. It involves Saturn and Jupiter at the base with this pair also helping mitigate the T-square, further implying its relevant. The eye is the fast-moving Moon and ruler of function, who may find a way to see things more clearly at a practical level. Taking action is favored as well toward taking control or letting go of something, which has been one of the T-square's themes.

For Librans, this station occurs in you 3rd house of thoughts, ideas, siblings, neighbors and local travel, implying you'll reconsider or reverse a previous decision. The retrograde began in fellow Cardinal Sign, Capricorn, your 4th house of home environment, memories, cultural roots, endings and new beginnings, so this part of your life is involved as well, so think of these areas as the context for this station. Saturn in your 3rd house can bring additional structure albeit a touch of pessimism to your thoughts as well as additional responsibility. Jupiter is in your sign, which usually has a positive effect, though Jupiter is somewhat like Mercury in that he is mostly neutral and simply adds to anything he touches. Saturn and Jupiter are sextile, forming the base of the yod and indicating an opportunity awaits that can direct you toward something new and potentially fated. This is represented by the Moon in Taurus, your 8th house of transformations, sex, death and regeneration, debt and intense experiences. in other words, whatever this idea or situation happens to be, it will bring personal growth and have an important long-term effect on your life that will have an emotional impact, mostly likely of a positive nature.
