Lunations and Long-term Aspects

One thing you need to remember this month is that from May 6 - 30 Mercury will be retrograde.  This, of course, is one of those annoying times when just about anything that is electronic or mechanical either goes on the fritz or simply refuses to function properly.  Bulls will be quite affected by this particular transit because Mercury spends the first half of this obnoxious period in Gemini, your 2nd House of possessions, finances, needs, and pleasures and the second half in Taurus, your 1st House of personality.  It's a good thing that most of you are patient by nature, because the frustration level has the potential to be extremely high.  Remember the drill:  It's ill-advised to purchase anything that fits the above-mentioned categories.  When you take possession of something it becomes imprinted with a "birth chart" of ownership from that moment and if it's a mechanical or electronic device with Mercury RX it is unlikely that it will ever function properly.

Mercury rules all movement, from neurons to 18-wheelers, so there is little it won't affect.  Communications of all sorts will also be affected (movement of data) so getting your point across is not going to be easy, either.  However, this time is good for something and that is to go back to the drawing board on anything you have in-work and make sure you're heading in the right direction.  Editing, revising, rethinking and re-planning are all activities that will be supported astrologically.  Unfortunately, and I really hate to tell you this, but if your birthday falls during that period you'll have Mercury RX on your solar return chart, which means it will affect you to some degree for the entire year to come.  I apologize on behalf of the planets but want to assure you that they definitely won't do as I say.  If they would, believe me I wouldn't have Pluto currently parked on my Natal Sun.  If there's one thing that Mercury and Pluto both prove it's that size definitely doesn't matter; a personal encounter with either of them and you have no doubt you've been screwed.

So what a wonderful start that is for the month, eh?  Let's see what the Full Moon is up to on May 8.  If that happens to be your birthday, give or take a day or maybe two, this will also be reflected on your solar return chart.  A Full Moon hails a culmination of some description, so if that's your birthday it will be the conclusion of a certain phase of your life; you can expect things to shift direction in some way from that point on.  For the rest of you it will be in effect until next month, except there's a long-term aspect in force that's going to be hanging in there for a while, i.e. until mid-August.  But I digress.  First of all, the Moon will be in Scorpio, your 7th House of close relationships.  Therefore, it's likely to have something to do with that part of your life.

Since the aspects in effect color the lunation, other things to look for include some adjustments to how you perceive the sex roles, particularly with regard to romance and also raising children.  Saturn has been retrograde in your 5th House of children, romance, ego expression, creativity, entertainment, and speculation since New Years Eve, which has been urging you at the subconscious level to restructure this part of your life.  Saturn goes direct on May 16, so from that point on you'll be implementing these changes.  Pluto is retrograde in your 9th House of beliefs, expectations, legal matters, higher learning and long-distance travel, which is stirring up a few additional food for thought there as well, especially since he's making contact with Mercury RX; your long-held paradigms are definitely up for review.  As a Fixed Sign change isn't something you relish, but fortunately you'll have plenty of time to think about it.  New insights and understanding are a good thing.

The most interesting aspect out there, the one alluded to earlier that will be in effect until late summer, is a stellium in Aquarius, your 10th House of career, reputation, and public image.  A stellium is a grouping of at least three astrological entities (remember they're not all planets) that are in the same house or sign.  In this case, they're not only all in the same sign, but in close conjunction.  By the time of the New Moon, they'll all be in the same degree, giving their effect a tremendous boost.  The trio involved are all slow movers, thus the long duration, and comprise Jupiter, Neptune, and the asteroid, Chiron.  Let's look at each of them influence-wise and then throw them all together and see what comes out of this cosmic stew.

Jupiter, the largest known planet, is known for expanding and enlarging what he contacts.  This can bring us luck or, conversely, it can make us over-confident, like an over-inflated balloon.  Neptune tends to dissolve and distort what he contacts.  He's the master of delusion and illusion.  He can be very idealistic, compassionate and charitable, but tends to exist in a dream world that doesn't exist.  Put these two together with respect to your career and you have either giant delusions or illusions or, conversely, a strong dedication to charity and giving, such as a David Copperfield, the magician, in the first case, or Mother Theresa in the second.  The third party, Chiron, is known as the wounded healer.  In your birth chart he represents the part of your life where you'll experience painful events, whether physical, mental, emotional, spiritual or even financial, depending on the house and sign placement.  The principle behind Chiron is that we take these wounds that never entirely heal and use the wisdom, knowledge and compassion we gained in dealing with them and help others similarly affected.  For example, someone who had learning disabilities as a child may become a special education teacher.

Putting this entire package together in your 10th House implies that you may be giving a lot of thought to finding a more satisfying career where you can help others more directly than you are now.  You could also be considering doing something entirely unrealistic, such as running off to Hollywood to become the next Steven Spielberg, but as a nice, practical Earth Sign I doubt that's the case.  Also bear in mind, if this sounds totally off the wall and doesn't fit you at all, that this is all based on Sun Sign astrology, which defines your first house by the sign in which your Sun is placed.  Your own, personal birth chart defines your ascendant or rising sign, and thus the boundary of that 1st House, based on the time you were born and which sign and degree was on the eastern horizon at that time.  I have found that Sun Sign astrology works reasonably well with regard to things over which we have little or no control; in other words events that happen to us out there in the world.  Our personal chart and house structure governs those things over which our free will has more affect.  Since career is a matter of personal choice, there's no telling.  I would expect that the world is pressuring you in this regard, even if it's really not something you'd choose for yourself.

Uranus, planet of sudden change, disruptions, rebellion and the unexpected, is interacting with that stellium from your 11th house of groups, organizations, friends, hopes and wishes, implying that something unexpected is going to trigger all that career business.  This is all in effect with the Full Moon but also largely the same things are out there for the New Moon as well, implying it all will go to a new phase at that time.

The New Moon occurs in Gemini, your 2nd House of financial matters, possessions, needs and pleasures, on May 24.  Knowing how you value material security, if you do happen to be thinking about a major career change, finances are obviously going to be a consideration.  Thus, this will jump-start that process.  By then Saturn is out of retrograde and you're getting a few things established and within the week Mercury will also go direct.  Thus, you'll be giving these things a lot of thought and by the time of the New Moon, which obviously heralds something new coming into your life, you should have a reasonably good idea which direction you want to go.

Daily and Short-term Aspects

These aspects will drive the daily events and decisions that take you in the direction dictated by the outer planets.  Bulls especially don't make major decisions over night but proceed down a cautious, conservative path toward well-defined goals usually based on security.  May starts out with your Sign Ruler, Venus, squaring Pluto, which will be in effect from May 1 - 9.  Venus is in your 12th House of spirituality, dreams, enlightenment, institutions and hidden enemies and Pluto is in your 9th House of beliefs, legal matters, higher learning and so forth.  Pluto excels at unearthing things that we've kept hidden or failed to confront while Venus' effect is usually quite pleasant.  The implication here is that if there's something that's been holding you back, whether it's your a priori assumptions or lack of education that Venus is going to show you the way to make the needed changes.  This may come by backing you up against the wall in some way, since a square is involved, but the overall lesson is one you need to listen to.

Right around May 5 expect to be taking a good look at your views regarding your ego expression, children, romantic interests, or speculation.  This is a positive time where new insights are likely regarding your approach to one of these 5th House elements.  Mercury goes retrograde on the 6th, so that will set those reconsiderations in motion, followed by the Full Moon on the 8th.  Around the 11th you should start to figure out what adjustments you need to make in order to get started on your new path.  Something could come along at that time that forces the issue or it may be voluntary.  Saturn goes direct on May 16 and at that time there will also be a major emphasis on that career change, with the catalyst coming from one of your group associations or possibly your own decision to pursue your hopes and wishes.  Within a few days of May 18th some significant ideas should come your way.  If this happens to be your birthday, these ideas and rethinking your previous approach to life will continue all year, though you may also tend to be pretty egocentric.

Also on May 16th more information will be coming your way regarding that career or life's work impetus and will include more adjustments, perhaps due to a Catch-22 situation you need to address.  The Sun goes into Gemini on the 21st, bringing emphasis to your possessions, finances and pleasures.  Expect some opportunities to come your way at that time, possibly from networking.  About this same time, you'll realize that some of your previously held beliefs definitely require an attitude adjustment of some description.  Remember if you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep on getting what you've always got.  The New Moon occurs on the 24th, then on the 26th a burst of energy will hit those career aspirations.  However, until the 30th when Mercury goes direct, you may not be able to accomplish anything as far as moving forward.

This is an important time of year for you.  You're starting a new cycle and there are lots of interesting aspects out there to nudge you along the path you're supposed to be pursuing.  The Universe is allowing you the time you need to get it together, but moving forward is necessary, no matter how slowly.  If you're not progressing you're moving backwards, so gather the information you need while giving deep consideration to what has worked and what hasn't so far.  It's important to listen to what the cosmos is trying to tell you at this time.
