NEW MOON 

The New Moon this month on 8/9th October (depending on your timezone) is in Libra. The lunation's quincunx to Neptune suggests an adjustment, change of direction, or perhaps a Catch-22 situation could arise due to anything from confusion to inspiration. That's a rather huge spread, but all in the same neighborhood since ethereal concepts are less than crystal clear. In their negative manifestation they can result in delusions while their positive side can be a direct link to your higher self or higher power to receive what could be an important revelation. Note that this will relate to the house noted above. A quincunx is also called an inconjunct and is a rather uncomfortable aspect that mixes two signs that have nothing in common, i.e. their modality (cardinal, fixed, or mutable) or element (fire, earth, air, water). Thus, it's like mixing oil and water and you know how well that tends to work out. Thus, it's also difficult to predict, its character a lot like Uranus.

Venus is trining Neptune from Scorpio, a more harmonious energy exchange, though Venus is in the sign of her debility. And note that Venus stations retrograde this month a few days prior to the lunation (more on the station below) so she's not only in a sign where her characteristics aren't the most favorable, she's also in the mode where she is morphing from the goddess of love into the goddess of war. As if that alone isn't enough, she's squaring Mars in Aquarius. This does NOT look good for relationships, even more so since Libra is the sign that rules relationships generally. So something new is coming to a relationship near you that looks slightly less than friendly. If you've been hanging out with someone, whether friend or lover, chances are some changes are likely this month.

Okay, I know I said that this lunation pertains to the house noted in the box above. However, with Libra, Venus, and Mars involved, that throws the odds toward the people in your life. Thus, even though the strongest effect may be concentrated in the house as noted, that, in turn, is going to impact a relationship, one way or another. After all, relationships, especially the close kind, are quite pervasive and affect many parts of your life, which are represented by the houses. For example, the 2nd house may deal with your income and possessions, but since when don't relationships have an influence there? And the 9th house may be primarily your beliefs and expectations, but they have a huge bearing on how you relate to people, especially the ones close to you, as well.

Ooooh, boy, it gets even better. The lunation is squaring Pluto in Capricorn. This is almost laughable, since Pluto relates to power and control issues as well as unresolved matters from the past. If you can't see how that can affect relationships, then you are either a space alien or been living in a cave by yourself your entire existence.

On top of all that, as if it's not already enough, there is a trine between Saturn and Uranus, which has been out there for quite a while. While a trine is often seen as "good", this is not exactly true. Rather, it's an easy exchange of energy (unlike the quincunx described above). These two planets are quite antithetical so there's really not too much about them that harmonizes. Saturn is conventional, traditional, conservative, responsible, and authoritative while Uranus is rebellions, creative, explosive, disruptive, and tends to provoke sudden change. No conflict there, right? Just kidding, of course. Thus, the upshot of this is that even if everyone in your particular life's circle is getting along famously, there's going to be all sorts of sparks flying around you. You're likely to see it at work and certainly in the world generally. Venus retrograde is the coup de grace. If you have a bunker or safe haven, you might want to review your escape plan.

Full Moon

The Full Moon this month is in Taurus. With the Moon conjunct Uranus within an orb of less than a degree, needless to say that bad boy is going to throw some energy into the lunation. Combined with what the New Moon started, this ought to be interesting, especially with mid-term elections coming in the USA. Venus retrograde is conjunct the Sun, not quite as tightly as Uranus and the Moon, but close enough to be lost in the glare of the Sun's rays. This is close to the midpoint of the retrograde cycle, which is where the fun begins.

This double opposition is part of a Triangle of Potential with Saturn at the apex. This aspect pattern typically indicates that the planet in that position will mediate the opposition. Well, it's a good thing that Saturn is in Capricorn, sign of his dignity, because he's going to need all the help he can get to referee this. It implies that those Saturnian values of authority, order, and responsibility need to prevail. This is not to say it will happen quietly, however. With a square between Mercury, who's in Scorpio, which tends to make the planet that rules communications rather tactless and inclined to go straight for the jugular, and Mars, who as you should know is the god of war, there is going definitely to be some sparks flying, and most likely not in a friendly way.

OTHER COSMIC EVENTS

Venus stations retrograde on 5 October in Scorpio. Venus retrograde happens approximately every 18 - 19 months. The last time was March - May 2017, the one before that, July - September 2015. But the one you really need to try to remember was the one back in October - November 2010, not only about the same time of year as this one, but also in the sign of Scorpio. There's a chance that whatever she stirred up back then is going to reappear now, both on a personal and mundane level.

Venus retrograde was something that ancient astronomers and astrologers paid close attention to. This makes sense, given she's the next brightest object in the night sky after the Moon. Mesoamericans understood her retrograde cycles well, and the story they attached to it was not pretty. Venus already has a dual side, reflected by her rulership of both Taurus and Libra. As the ruler of Taurus, she is earthy and given to material comforts and pleasures. She's sensual and receptive. As the ruler of Libra, she's more proper, given more to aesthetics, manners, and propriety. Both of these are pleasant, but in different ways. However, when retrograde, when she goes from being the goddess of love, reflected when she's seen in the sky as the Evening Star, she morphs into the goddess of war as she becomes the Morning Star. Her entire character changes. There are other warrior goddess, like Pallas Athene, but she was known for her wisdom and fairness. Warrior Venus is vicious and blood-thirsty. She's the Venus that shows no mercy, the one that some claim could end war entirely if women ruled the world, based on sheer brutality and determination to exterminate her enemies, by whatever means necessary. No games, no fairness, only victory.

To quote Erin Sullivan, author of Retrograde Planets: Traversing the Inner Landscape, "...we all know of the monster our shadow Venus brings out in us. It has been called 'green-eyed', but is in fact a representative of all that we may not have, or cannot bring to the light of day." (p. 87) Let that sink in for a moment.

According to Ms. Sullivan, the fun begins when Venus backs up enough to conjoin the Sun which will be right around October 26 - 27. A new phase of evaluation or action begins at this point. Her heliacal rising, or advent as the Morning Star, begins right around November 2. Election Day in the USA in November 6. Do the math. Astrologer and anthropologist, Bruce Scofield, has noted that the heliacal rising 'often corresponds to a time of failure ore resignation on the part of leaders and often coincides with a major accident or storm.' (as quoted in Sullivan's book, p. 94-5)
