NEW MOON The New Moon this month is on 4 February in Aquarius. The planets are distributed in the zodiac in a very lopsided manner, only occupying 5 of the 12 signs. These include Jupiter in Sagittarius; Venus, Saturn, and Pluto in Capricorn; The Sun, Moon, and Mercury in Aquarius; Neptune in Pisces; Mars and Uranus in Aries. What's particularly interesting is that Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Mars are all in dignity, making them rather strong and efficient in their energy output. Some consider Mercury as exalted in Aquarius, so that's another strong placement. Elements are somewhat balanced with Fire, Earth, and Air each having three planets, but Water only has one, which cuts back on the emotional side. Neptune in Pisces, however, has been stirring up plenty of influence lately with his ongoing square with Jupiter, which tends to create philosophies that are too idealistic to be possible. This lunation creates a semisextile to Neptune, a minor aspect that tends to bring an annoyance or irritation. So with the New Moon in the sign of groups and social reform, this looks like it will bring a new surge of annoying, unrealistic proposals at an individual and mundane level. Saturn is semisextile the lunation as well, bringing the voice of authority to bear, and more annoyances and irritations. What's particularly interesting, however, is that Saturn and Neptune are also in aspect, but with a sextile, which typically denotes an opportunity. So while there may be some friction, there's also a possibility for finding a compromise. Mercury's sextile with Jupiter will facilitate communicating these philosophical ponderings, but that doesn't make them any more feasible, unless common sense from all that Air makes itself known. Mars and Uranus conjunct in Aries look like trouble, especially with Mars squaring Pluto. This is a rather explosive combination that is worth watching. Uranus is definitely taking his time getting out of Aries, which won't happen until next month. Personally, I'll be grateful when this occurs, since he's been messing with my natal Mercury for months and I'm tired of all the crazy disruptions. FULL MOON The Full Moon on 19 February occurs in Virgo. Now Aquarius is empty, but Taurus now has a resident, i.e. Mars. He's forming a Triangle of Potential with the lunation, suggesting that slow, deliberate action will help you get moving with whatever this lunation is trying to prod you to do. With the planets out of Aquarius, all those annoying semisextiles are now gone, replaced by several sextiles. Mercury in Pisces is in debility, however, which doesn't help communications that much, especially now that he's squaring Jupiter, making them even more exaggerated. This dreamy, idealistic state, especially with him conjunct Neptune, can generate some pretty wild ideas. The good news, however, is the sextile to Saturn and Venus in Capricorn, who may be able to bring some common sense to the table and again generate a happy medium. OTHER COSMIC INFLUENCES You may have noticed that we have no retrograde planets this month. This means each of them is operating in its full glory, especially those that happen to be in dignity for the New Moon. This is rather rare; I can't recall the last time this occurred, with only two still in shadow. Mercury will go retrograde next month, but for now each is functioning in an extroverted fashion, as opposed to when their retrograde and their energy is internalized. One thing I seldom mention here or, to be honest, pay that much attention to, is declination. This is how far a planet lies in degrees above or below the celestial equator. Mostly in astrology, when we talk about aspects, they relate to zodiacal position, which equates to longitude. However, when planets are in the same or opposite declination, they have a similar effect to a conjunction or opposition, respectively. When you think of planets in conjunction, if you look at them in the sky, you would expect them to be right next to or even on top of one another, but this is not the case. Visually, one may be a significant distance above or below the other. When they're parallel by declination, they'll be at the same distance from the celestial equator, or elevation. When they are BOTH in conjunction AND parallel, then and only then will they be in the same place in the sky. When this happens with one of the inner planets, i.e. Mercury or Venus, and the Sun, that is when we can see the planet transit across the face of the Sun, like occurred with Venus a while back. When planets connect in both latitude and longitude, the connection is especially strong. For example, for the Full Moon this month, the Moon and Mars are trine. They are also parallel, so this influence will be particularly strong. Mars in Taurus is much like a bulldozer, moving forward slowly, but relentlessly. A Virgo Moon is meticulous, suggesting doing things correctly and precisely. So this effect will be stronger than usual. Saturn and Pluto are a little bit wide for a conjunction, but in parallel, so those two in Capricorn are likely to produce some heavy-handed authoritarian moves, wielding any power they can. Keep that in mind if you should wind up in traffic court or a showdown with your boss.
