Leos are born knowing that they're royalty and expect to be doted upon as such.  They're confident by nature, being a resident of the 5th House of ego, creativity, romance, speculation and entertainment, yet surprisingly sensitive and caring.

Leos are easy to spoil.  They just expect it in such an unpretentious way that you feel as if it's your duty to provide them with anything they need.  They are generally good natured, but like that cute lion cub, can have quite the tantrum when displeased.  After all, they are a Fire Sign and can display a healthy temper when provoked.  Remember that Leos are ruled by the Sun which is the center of the solar system.  Thus, if they get plenty of attention and believe that they're the center of the universe, chances are things will go well.  However, if they're not your only child or you have other distractions such as a day job meaning they have to compete for attention they can get pretty creative in how they obtain it.  Just remember that a Leo child needs attention and praise every bit as much as s/he needs food, clothing and love.

Since Leos truly believe they are royalty, they tend to have a bit of an entitlement mentality.  Again, they aren't always demanding, though they can be, but they definitely have high expectations.  The older they get, the higher the expectations.  That appetite for attention can also increase with age.  They like to be noticed so don't be surprised if your little (or not so little) Lion dresses quite outlandishly once they reach adolescence.  Now lots of kids will dress in a manner that parents frown upon, sometimes because they can't match their clothes, others because they have a favorite shirt they won't allow to be laundered, or they just have weird taste.  Leos, however, will have generally good taste except they'll want to be stylish.  They also like bright colors.  In fact, it's a good idea to paint their room in nice sun-shiny colors, even something like red or orange that you might not be able to stand yourself.  Even if you have to put on sunglasses to go in there, accommodate them in this way.  They can't stand a dull environment, which they'll find horribly depressing, so it's in your best interest in the long run to indulge them, like it or not.

Leos are natural leaders, which shouldn't be surprising, and as such they tend to be bossy.  Depending on other influences in their Natal Chart, they may accomplish this is a brassy or loud manner but they may also take control in a less assuming way, but they will get their way, whatever it takes.  Since they like to be surrounded by their adoring subjects, they tend to get along reasonably well with other children, especially those who tend to follow rather than lead.  Whatever you do, don't discourage your child from being a leader.  They're going to do so as second nature anyway so accept it and do everything you can to teach him or her the responsibility it entails.  Teach them honesty, kindness, and understanding so they don't lead others astray.

Don't underestimate how sensitive your little Lion is.  They get their feelings hurt quite easily and can lick their wounds for a long, long time.  They tend to be creative and like to make presents for their loved ones.  Always accept them as if they have given you the Hope Diamond.  Foster their creativity however you can.  Whatever they take a liking to, let them pursue it and show off their work.  Even if they're only a toddler, it will mean a lot to them to have their work of art displayed proudly on the refrigerator.  Brag about them in front of others and watch them shine.

When they reach adolescence and their teens be sure they have something to keep them busy and to obtain that limelight they crave.  Sports, dance, martial arts, music, whatever, encourage them to develop their natural talents, which are many, and direct their ego in an appropriate manner.  Leos have a natural grace that lends itself well to physical activities.  They may not be the fastest one out there, but they will look the best, effortlessly.  They may not be terrifically competitive or need to come in first; they can tend to be a bit lazy, especially if something comes easily.  Given a touch of Aries or Capricorn, they'd more inclined to compete heavily, or possibly even some Virgo, which would throw some perfectionism in there.  The fact of the matter is they like to think they're the best and don't need a medal or trophy to prove it.  If they get overly competitive it might just be because they aren't getting enough attention as it is.

Just don't forget if they don't get enough attention in an acceptable way, they will get it however they can and you probably won't like it.  Some kids may not care that much whether or not you show up at their games, concerts, competitions and so forth, but a Leo will expect it and if you don't they'll be quite hurt.  They probably won't say anything, because even at a young age they tend to be on the private side, but it will hurt their pride and self-worth in such a way that it could cause lasting scars.

It's important to understand that their need for attention and praise is not because of conceit.  They truly need to be validated, overtly loved, and receive their energy from others.  This is just the way they're wired.  This is not to say that some of them won't be on an ego trip, because in some cases they will, but this is more likely if they're not getting enough attention.  All kids need attention, but a young Lion or Lioness NEEDS attention.  Lots of it.  If you have other children you'll obviously have to be creative yourself in how you accomplish this.  Your best bet is to teach them to help you in whatever way they are capable and then lavish them with praise.  If the other kids want to help to get their share, all the better.  Just remember they can't help needing attention any more than a Cancer child can help being moody or emotional.

Teach them to work so that they understand its benefits and rewards.  Remember that tendency toward an entitlement mentality and steer them away from it gently but firmly.  Praise is even more important than payment; they need to learn that a job well-done is its own reward, anyway, and if they get plenty of attention they won't complain.  As they grow older they will like nice things.  While some teenagers are happy with an old, beat-up car as their first vehicle, your Leo will probably expect something new; if it has to be used, then it will need to be something classy like a BMW, Mercedes, or Porsche.

Typically Leos are good kids, at least if they get the love and attention they require.  They need some alone time, but generally love to be front and center.  Give them the emotional support they need and they will be loyal, loving and make you proud.
